Despite the cold Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is growing daily in members and energy. So a huge welcome to all the new members and a big thank you to existing students who have been assisting with teaching new members the ropes.
While we’ve been busy practising triangles and guard passes lately, it’s key to remember that Docklands BJJ practises a self defense style of jiu jitsu that is applicable to real life situations. Our sessions are suitable for beginners and it’s never too late to join up and learn some great Jiu Jitsu moves!
Longtime club member Rodney Mcleod was awarded his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by coach Andrew Lai and head of Nexus Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Murat Karazendili. Rodney has spent years on the mats and is known amongst club members as not only a great training partner and Jiu Jitsu player, but also as a great guy!
Congratulations to Rodney on the excellent achievement. Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu looks forward to all club members continuing their progress.
Good news, Tuesday training sessions will make a triumphant return from Tuesday the 1st of April 2014. The sessions were previously suspended due to low attendance rates, however given the renewed interest by club members, the session is back!

Our parent academy Nexus Jiu Jitsu is hosting a Royce Gracie seminar which all Docklands BJJ members are invited and encouraged to attend! Tickets to this event in Greensborough are $150 and is absolutely the chance of a lifetime to learn directly from a legend.
Along with the seminar however the Nexus family is also booking in a group trip to go to Brazil again in the month of September to train with world renowned Pedro Sauer. As well as being an 8th dan red-black belt, Pedro is the head of our worldwide association and is an incredible encyclopedia of knowledge. Docklands BJJ head instructor Andrew Lai attended last year, and came back with enough new techniques and tricks to last for many years.
Contact either Phil or Andrew for further information on both the seminar and the Brazil trip. In the meanwhile see you all on the mats!
Congratulations to Docklands BJJ member Tai Nguyen on his victorious MMA debut! After two tough rounds, Tai’s opponent was unable to continue to round three, handing the victory over to Tai. A video of Tai’s impressive win is available below and on Youtube:
Separate to Tai’s MMA victory, club member and Kudo training group instructor Rodney Mcleod showcased his skills in a Kudo training match. Well done on a great match and also, thank you to Shihan Takashi for helping to referee the session. Truly, the more we learn about Kudo, the more we love it!
From Thursday the 4th of April 2013, we will be starting our long awaited Kudo training sessions which will be instructed by our own Rodney McLeod. Kudo session will run every Thursday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
Rodney comes from a rich martial arts background with over 15 years of experience in Shito-Ryu Karate and Yoshikan Aikido and literally just came back from Okinawa after training in Goju Karate. As well as traditional styles, Rodney practices kickboxing, wrestling and currently trains with in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Kudo is very much a new martial art to Australia, and as an official training group, we are working with Rodney to attain a Kudo black belt in order to become a fully recognised dojo. Please feel free to come on this journey with us – every Thursday 6:30pm at the Docklands Hub!
After a short holiday break, we are now back for 2013 as of Monday the 7th of January! Session times remain the same, all starting at 5:45pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This year promises to be a huge year as we begin our journey into the realm of Kudo. For those of you who are unaware of Daido Juku Kudo, it is a martial art which mixes kickboxing, judo, wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. After a successful seminar late last year with Branch Chief Paul Cale, Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become an official Kudo Australia training group – the first in Melbourne!
Stay tuned for more information these new Kudo sessions and in the meanwhile see below for some photos from the Kudo seminar.

Pedro’s seminar last year was a life changing experience for many, and it was incredible to see his technique live in person. After spending many dedicated years on the mats, head instructor of Docklands BJJ Andrew Lai was officially awarded his Gracie Jiu Jitsu brown belt last Saturday by his instructor, Murat Karadenzili. As one of only two Pedro Sauer Association brown belts in Australia, Andrew proved that he is not only a proficient martial artist, but is also an expert in Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defense techniques.
Andrew is one of Murat’s original students, and the belt promotion is a reflection of the hard work put in by Andrew on the mats week and year after year. Congratulations to Andrew on a job well done!
Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is excited to announce that it is now running kids martial arts classes with Melbourne Kids Karate at our Docklands Hub venue. The classes will be run by experienced Karate master, Sensei Rodney Mcleod.
Current members will recognise Rodney as the high level blue belt with great wrestling and triangle attacks, however Rodney actually comes from a Karate background having practised it for over 15 years. Hence the Melbourne Kids Karate classes will incorporate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and freestyle wrestling, along with the Karate.
